interfacings-1.3 Flashcards
what is bondaweb?
a commercially available fusible fleece- it is a double sided adhesive web which is attached to transfer paper
how do you apply bondaweb?
by using an iron- the heat melts the adhesive onto the fabric
what is bondaweb used for?
temporarily bonding one fabric to another
why is bondaweb used in applique?
-to temporarily bond two fabrics together
-to prevent fraying
what is interfacing?
an extra layer of fabric used under or between the outer layers of fabric
what do you have to do when choosing interfacing?
ensure that the properties of the interfacing are similar to the properties of the fabric- e.g using stretch interfacing for elastic fabrics to give structure and strength but still allow for stretch
when is interfacing applied?
Before garment construction begins
what is interfacing used for?
-strengthening the garment/fabric
-giving a crisp shape
-stop the fabric from stretching
-stabilising the fabric ready for embroidery
what is underlining?
a separate layer of fabric, which is cut to the same size and is used alongside the outer fabric
what properties should underlining have?
-lightweight
-have same after care requirements as the outer fabric
what are some possible underlining fabrics?
-cotton muslin
-organza
-satin
what does underlining help with?
-maintaining the shape of the garment without stiffening it
-support the seams in loose-weave fabrics
-provide opacity to sheer fabrics, which makes them less see-through
what is lining?
a separate layer of fabric which is attached to the product at facing or hem areas
what are lining fabrics usually made from?
-polyester
-acetate
-silk
what can lining fabrics be?
even woven or knitted
