Kinesiology - describing movement Flashcards
What is a concentric muscle contraction?
muscle is in tension and thus the length is shortening
What is an eccentric muscle contraction?
muscle is in tension and thus the length is lengthening
What is an isometric muscle contraction?
muscle is in tension, however the muscle length stays the same
What is a passive muscle contraction?
muscle is not in tension
What is an agonist?
the muscle(s) responsible for performing or controlling the movement (sometimes can be called prime movers)
What is an antagonist?
the muscle(s) that could oppose the agonists if activated
What is a synergist?
muscles that assist in the action of the agonists (guiding muscles)
What is a stabiliser?
muscles that contract to stabilise nearby joints
