Kin 4 Arthrokinematics Flashcards
End feel
Quality of the feel at the end of the joints passive ROM
Bony End Feel
hard abrupt limit
normal Soft Tissue Stretch/Firm End Feel
firm with slight give limit
Soft tissue approximation/Soft end feel
muscle bulk limits
abnormal Bony End Feel
hard stop well before normal end of ROM
Boggy End Feel
soft wet sponge feel (soft tissue edema is present)
Muscle Spasm
a protective reflexive muscle guarding during range
Empty end feel
pt will not let you move it due to pain
springy block
rebound movement at end of ROM (usually occurs with internal derangement of a joint i.e. torn cartilage)
Arthrokinematics
joint surface motion
Osteokinematics
Joint motion
Component movements
happen with active motion but involuntary
Joint play (accessory motion)
passive moving between joint surfaces started by an external forced being applied
joint mobilization (accessory motion)
constant stretch at slow speed, where pt could stop motion if they needed to
Joint manipulation (accessory motion)
quick passive motion applied externally, that can’t be stopped
manipulation vs mobilzation
fast forceful vs slow able to be stopped
ovoid
convex into concave relationship
sellar/saddle shaped joint
both joint surfaces have concave one way and convex the other
Roll
type of arthrokinematic motion, rolling of one joint surface on another
Glide
1 point on a joint surface going over new points on the adjacent surface
spin
spinning of the movable joint surface on the fixed adjacent surface.
concave-convex rule
convex surface moves in the opposite direction of the body segment’s motion
are abducted ^ convex surface v
Concave surface moves in same direction
Finger extended ^ concave surface ^
a joint is Congruent/Close-packed
joint surfaces have max contact with each other, conpressed, and are difficult to separate
a joint is in resting position/open-packed
parts of capsule/supporting ligaments lax, minmal congruency between articular surfaces. Joint play/accessory motions can occur in this position
Accessory motion forces
traction/distraction/tension, approximation/compression, shear, bending
Shear force
results in a glide motion
