jenness- ambiguous
asch- unambiguous
ASCHS study aim
to investigate how conformity was affected in unambiguous situations
ASCH procedure
123 male students in groups of 6-8 confederates
asch showed line X and asked pps which out of 3 lines matched X
confederates purposely said wrong to enhance conformity
ASCH results
conformed 32% of the time
when only two confederates, pps conformed on 12.8% of TRIALS
ASCH conclusion
people conform in unambiguous situations due to normative social influence
ASCH variation: group size
increasing group size , increased conformity
ASCH variation: unanimity
one confederate disagreed, decreased conformity
ASCH variation: task difficulty
as difficulty increased, conformity increased as pps looked for more guidance

escalated way too quickly
inhuman sides became clear
2nd day prisoners revolted
ZIMBARDO conclusions
guards: institutional power was absorbed and increased sadistic personality
prisoners:
obeyed almost immediately
MILGRAM: aim
will people obey, even if it means hurting others
MILGRAM procedure
- 40 males , yale university
- confederates acted as learners being ‘shocked’
- experimenter encouraged to keep going
MILGRAMS findings
Americans obeyed too
100% went to 300V
65% went to 450V
many people had shakes, even seizures

MOSCOVICI PROCEDURE
172 female participants were shown 36 slides, which were all varying shades of blue.
c1 all green
c2 24 green 12 blue
MOSCOVICI FINDINGS
Moscovici found that in the consistent condition, the real participants agreed on 8.2% of the trials, whereas in the inconsistent condition, the real participants only agreed on 1.25%
