Briefly describe haw an IIT/CCD cone beam CT works and what are the main issues?

A
  • Image intensifier tube and charge coupled device
  • uses a phosphor screen to convert xRays to visible light, then it is converted to electrons, re-detected and converted to images
  • Problems are lots of noise and artifacts

Brifly describe how an FPD CBCT works?

A
  • Flat panel detector
  • detection of xrays in sensor elements and converted to photons, which are then converted to an electrical signal
  • arrangement is less complicated andhas less distortion

What problems are encountered when comparing systems to one another?

A

Different technical specs from different manufacturers make comparisons between machines very difficult.

results of scientific studies are usually confined to the type of CBCT system employed

What difficulties were encounterd with using CBCT for dental imaging?

A

Machine has pre-set parameters that couldn’t be adjusted manually

attempted to make panoramic/half panoramic images for entire dentition.

Had to increase slice thickness so much that they lost a lot of spatial resolution

What was the conclusion with regard to the images attained and how they compare to dental radiography?

A

Unfortunately, the moderate image quality reported
here is inferior to diagnostic image quality obtained from 2-dimensional dental radiographs
