Jones Flashcards
Christian teaching about the last things: heaven, hell, death, judgement, the second coming of Christ, and the kingdom of God
Eschatology
The kingdom of God is a future we long for, but it is also breaking into the world today
Eschatological tension
The present-tense kingdom reality that began with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and continues right up to this present moment
Already
The future-tense reality of the kingdom to come in fullness, visibility, and power
Not-yet
Forfeits future hope, discounting the fullness of the kingdom, which is not yet embodied among us
Overly realized eschatology
Expects Christ to return before the thousand year of Revelation. Theologies expect life to grow worse and worse as we draw near to the coming of Christ
Premillennialism
Looks for Christ’s second coming after the millennium, understood as a time when Christ will reign from heaven through power of the gospel. Theology looks on the world with optimism, expecting things to grow better as we approach the millennium
Postmillennialism
Does not see the millennium in Revelation as a future thousand years. The millennium is read as a symbolic reference to the kingdom reign of Christ, a reign that is both already and not yet
Amillennialism
Acting in the knowledge that something is always reserved for the not-yet
Eschatological reservation
The second coming of Christ
Parousia
We, like Jesus, will be raised from the dead to new life in new creation
General resurrection
The body dominated by the human soul or self: is always self-interested
Some psychikon
The body led by the Holy Spirit
Some pneumatikon
A life for the soul in the time between an individual’s death and the day of resurrection
Intermediate state
the interval between death and resurrection
Soul sleep
