Joints of the Hind Limb Flashcards
What are the joints of the pelvic girdle?
Pelvic symphysis
Sacroiliac joint
What is the pelvic symphysis?
The joint that connects the right and left os coxae
What is the pelvic symphysis made of?
Fibrocartilage
What forms the cranial half of the pelvic symphysis?
Pubic symphysis
What forms the caudal half of the pelvic symphysis?
Ischial symphysis
What forms the sacroiliac joint?
The R and L wings of ilia and R and L wings of sacrum
What type of articulation is the sacroiliac joint?
Fibrocartilaginous joint
Synovial joint
What is the implication of the sacroiliac joint being fibrocartilaginous mean?
It means its an articulation of stability
Why is the sacroiliac joint also a synovial joint?
Because the auricular surfaces are covered with cartilage and their margins are united by a thin joint capsule
What is the sacrotuberous ligament?
A collagenous band of CT from the transverse processes of S3 and Cd1 to the lateral angle of the ischiatic tuberosity
What is the function of the sacrotuberous ligament?
It serves as the origin for biceps femoris, caudal crural abductor, superficial gluteus, piriformis
What is the hip\coxofemoral joint?
A ball and socket\spheroidal joint
What constitutes the hip joint?
The acetabulum and head of femur
What are the main movements of the hip joint?
Extension and flexion
What is the acetabulum?
The cotyloid cavity of the os coxae
What are the parts of the acetabulum?
The lip, notch, and transverse acetabular ligament
What is the acetabular lip?
Applied to the rim of the acetabulum, it increases the depth of the acetabulum
What is the acetabular notch?
A normal defect found on the ventro\caudomedial aspect of the acetabulum
What is the transverse acetabular ligament?
Crosses the acetabular notch to complete the acetabular cavity
What is the ligament of the head of t he femur?
A thick band of collagenous connective tissue that extends from the acetabular fossa to the fovea capitis femoris
Is the ligament of the head of the femur able to bear weight?
No it is a non-weightbearing ligament
What is hip dysplasia?
A malformed hip joint that results in progressive degenerative disease
What happens to the hip joint?
Instability and causes pain, lameness in young dogs, and arthritis in later life
What dogs are susceptible to hip dysplasia?
Large breeds
