Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory ATI Flashcards
What is the age range for the Sensorimotor Stage of development?
0 - 2 Years
What is the age range for the Preoperational Stage of development?
2 - 6 Years
What is the age range for the Concrete Operational Stage of development?
6 - 12 Years
What is the age range for the Formal Operational Stage of development?
12 Years - Adulthood
What are the Developmental Characteristics of the Sensorimotor Stage of development?
With increased mobility and awareness, infants explore the world through direct sensory + motor contact.
Object Permanence + Separation Anxiety Occur.
What are the Developmental Characteristics of the Preoperational Stage of development?
Children use symbols (words and images) to represent objects + learn to express themselves through language and symbolic gestures, but don’t reason logically.
What are the Developmental Characteristics of the Concrete Operational Stage of development?
Children can think logically about concrete objects and can add + subtract.
They understand concepts of reversibility & speciality.
(“I just flipped this switch, and the lights went out. If I flip it again, in the opposite direction, then the lights might come back on again.” - This is an example of thinking in Reversibility
Can classify, socialize, and apply rules.
Deductive reasoning go brrr.
What are the Developmental Characteristics of the Formal Operational Stage of development?
Adolescents can reason abstractly + think in hypothetical terms.
They can test hypothesis, and can expand + refine their thinking and reasoning as they achieve cognitive maturity.
