Jaundice Flashcards
Jaundice = antemortem discolouration, caused by:
Buildup of bilirubin in blood stains tissues yellow
Main problem = Yellow discolouration
Oxidation reaction with acidic pH of formaldehyde can turn yellow discolouration green
Treatment #1
Use jaundice fluid -> low formaldehyde, dyes in formulation
Treatment #2
Use preinjection solution to flush out discolouration (ony for mild cases w/out edema)
Treatment #3
Use large volumes of mild arterial solution -> good when jaundice fluids not available but risks inadequate preservation
Treatment #4
Use specially formulated cavity fluid as arterial fluid -> should bleach discolouration
Treatment #5
Use bleaching coinjection fluids (if available, only for mild cases)
Treatment #6
Use counterstaining method -> inject numerous batches with different formulations to stain and preserve tissues
Other treatments;
- Use restricted cervical injection
- Use cosmetics & proper lighting for viewing
- Use fluid dyes
