Infants/Children Flashcards
Problem: High moisture content (75%); high fat content (12% in newborns) -> difficult to preserve
Treatment: do not use preinjection or large volumes of fluid
Problem: Skin is delicate, wrinkles, tears, distends easily
Treatment: use low pressure and rate of flow; be careful with incisions and suturing
Problem: Vessels are very small
Treatment: use smaller instruments, smaller cannuli
Use the following vessels: Common carotid, external iliac, abdominal and/or ascending aorta
Problem: Difficult to set features
Treatment: Use glue to close eyes and mouth; can leave lips slightly parted
Positioning is different:
Leave arms by sides
May be autopsied:
Makes vessel access easier, but requires more suturing; packing of head
Small size and high moisture content cause quick decomposition:
Use similar solution strength to adults (2%); use hypo and surface embalming
