Dehydration Flashcards
Causes (disease processes):
Slow hemorrhage; febrile diseases; kidney disease; diabetes; some cancers; first degree burns
Causes (environmental):
Air swipe; refrigeration; hypostasis; embalming process (formaldehyde = drying; drainage removes moisture)
Problem: Blood is thickened
Leads to poor distribution & drainage
Problem: dry, flaky skin
Treatment: apply massage cream
Problem: skin darkens & becomes firm; shrinking & wrinkling of skin
Dessication of eyes, lips, fingers (can’t be treated)
Problem: lack of moisture in cells & tissues
Treatment: use humectants; large volumes of solution
Treatment: Use large volumes of mild (2%) solution
Adds moisture & preserves tissues
Treatment: Inject at slow rate of flow
Prevents clots being pushed deeper into vascular system
Treatment: Use co-injection chemicals & humectant
Adds moisture; reduces drying effects of formaldehyde; helps tissues retain moisture
Treatment: Use intermittent/alternate drainage
Allows better, more uniform penetration of solution; reduces short circuits; helps tissues retain solution
Treatment: Apply massage cream to hands and face after embalming
Helps tissues retain moisture
Avoid excessive massage of tissues
Affects ability to retain moisture
Avoid placing body in air currents
Air swipe draws moisture from tissues
