Congestive Heart Failure Flashcards
Decreased heart function; leads to circulatory congestion in heart
Heart can’t pump enough blood to organs; blood returning to heart gets backed up = congestion
Caused by:
Heart attack; heart disease; high blood pressure; renal failure
Blood is thicker/more viscous
Gets congested in right atrium
Neck veins engorged with blood
Neck and face discoloured & distended
Cyanosis of lips, ears, fingertips
Treatment: lower arms over table (for fingers)
Edema may be present -> Generalized; pulmonary; and/or ascites
Treatment: use strong arterial solution
Treatment: Restricted cervical injection
To allow treatment of facial distention
Treatment: Continuous drainage from right IJV (or both)
Drains head & allows grabbing of clots from right atrium
Start injection with high pressure and rate-of-flow
Establishes distribution
Inject mild solution for 1st gallon, then increase strength
Clears clots & establishes drainage
Perform immediate & thorough cavity treatment
Reaspirate & reinject later if necessary
