Diabetes Mellitus Flashcards
Body doesn’t produce insulin properly, so can’t process glucose
Glucose accumulates in blood & urine -> damages organs and causes health problems
Can cause:
Heart, kidney, liver disease; eye disease; nerve damage; vascular damage; poor healing
Arteriosclerosis & vascular changes:
Poor peripheral circulation; gangrene; decubitus ulcers
Acidosis = abnormal pH levels
Tissues may not firm well -> increased preservative demand
Increase in bacterial & mycotic infections
Pruritis -> infected scratch marks; mycotic infections of lungs
Treatment: restricted cervical injection
Stronger treatments in body; different solutions for head
Treatment: Start with mild solution, then increase strength
Clears clots
Treatment: Use co-injection fluids, buffers, surfactants
Helps with distrubution & maintaining pH
Treatment: use fluid dyes
Trace distribution when it is a concern
Treatment: Use pulse mode; manipulate pressure & rate-of-flow
Maximizes fluid diffusion & distribution
Treatment: Drain from right IJV, use alternate drainage
Maximizes penetration to tissues
Perform cavity treatment immediately after embalming
Sanitizes cavities (potentially infected w/fungus or bacteria)
