Delayed Embalming Flashcards
3 most common issues of delayed embalming:
1) . Issues with distribution
2) . Increased preservative demand
3) . Tissues distend very easily
Vascular factors causing uneven distribution:
1) . Rigor mortis (extravascular resistance)
2) . Capillary breakdown
3) . Increased blood viscosity
4) . Postmortem coagula
Preservative demand increased because:
Protein breakdown increases # of attachment sites
Advancing decomp will cause:
Odours, skin slip, purge, gas
Fluid distribution & blood drainage is poor:
Use restricted cervical or 6-point/sectional embalming
Increased preservative demand+ risk of distention =
Use minimal amounts of strong (3% minimum) solution; high index chemicals; no preinjection
To avoid distention:
Use low pressure and rate-of-flow
To trace and assist distribution:
Use fluid dyes & coinjection fluids
Microbial activity in cavities =
Aspirate & inject cavities immediately, then reaspirate/reinject later
