January 8, 2016 - Medical Management of IHD Flashcards
Anti-Platelet Agents
ASA
Clopidogrel
Tocagrelor
Use two of these together. Will reduce the complications of an MI.
Statins
Used to lower cholesterol. Used after an MI to reduce the risk of recurrence.
Can lower cholesterol levels by 50%.
PCSK-9 Inhibitors
Used to lower cholesterol.
Can lower cholesterol an additional 50% when taken in combination with statins.
ACE Inhibitors
End in -pril.
Used to lower blood pressure. It does this by preventing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II (which is a vasoconstrictor). Thereby, blood pressure is lowered by reducing SVR.
ARB Inhibitors
Ends in -sartan
Lowers blood pressure.
Binds angiotensin receptors on vascular smooth muscle, preventing them from being activated. This lowers BP by reducing SVR.
Beta-Blockers
Lowers heartrate and blood pressure.
Blocks beta receptors, preventing epinephrine and norepinephrine from binding. This lowers both HR and BP.
Mediterranean Diet
Has been shown to (slightly) reduce CVD events.
CVD and Alcohol
Drink alcohol in moderation.
Not more than 2 drinks per day for men or 1 drinks per day for women.
Definitely, do not binge drink by having more than 6 drinks in a 12 hour window.
Nitroglycerin and ACS
Acts on smooth muscle and causes vasodilation.
Just because NTG helped, does not mean the condition was ACS. There is a lot of smooth muscle in your body.
