Typically caused by a V/Q mismatch

Type 2 Respiratory Failure
A
Is caused by inadequate alveolar ventilation and both oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are affected.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
A
A severe, life-threatening medical emergency characterized by widespread inflammation in the lungs.
ARDS may be t riggered by clinical insults such as trauma, pneumonia, and sepsis.
PaO2 / FiO2 < 200
