Voy
I go
Like soy
• “Me voy” → “I leave”
• When used with a reflexive pronoun, “I go” becomes “I leave”
• “Ya no me voy” → “At this point I am not leaving”
*Joel carries a walking stick because he thinks going down the long hallway it is like he is going on a voyage [voy].
Ir
To go
*Ir’s office looks like a big ear, and if you want to get to his office, you have to go [ir] through a long winding hallway.
Va
He, she, or it goes
*The lizard doesn’t carry a walking stick because he is used to traveling far [va] all the time.
Van
(vahn) - They go
* The pandas have short legs and aren’t used to traveling very far, so they go in a toy van [van].
Vas
You go
*Ir (the doctor) travels down the hallway very quickly, and Joel says “You go very fast [vas].”
Vamos
We go
“Vamos a ver a nuestras amigas.”
– We are going to see our friends. (feminine)
“Nos vamos a casar.”
– We’re going to get married.
“Vamos a tener que sacar el diente.”
We are going to have to pull the tooth.
“Vamos a la sección juvenil.”
– We are going to the junior’s section.
“Vamos a tener que hacer una cirugía dental.”
– We will have to perform dental surgery.
*Ir is hesitant to let them go down the hall, but Joel says that as friends, we can go farther than most [vamos].
Fuiste (tense?)
You went (preterite tense)
“Te fuiste por tu lado.”
-You went to your side.
“Tú fuiste sorprendido rompiendo una regla de la compañía.”
-You were caught breaking a company rule.
“¿Con quién te fuiste al cine ayer?”
-With whom did you go to the cinema yesterday?
*Ir (the doctor) goes back to a supply closet and plays with his rubber gloves. Joel says “You went to the closet, but that was a waste of time [fuiste]”
Fui (tense?)
I went (preterite)
*Joel is curious to see what is in the closet, so he sneaks in and then comes right back out. Ir (the doctor) catches Joel.
• Joel is mad that he has been caught and says “Phooey [fui], I got caught when I went into the closet!”
Fue (tense?)
He, she, or it went (preterite)
“Se fue con alguien mas”
• She left with someone else
*The lizard sneaks into the closet and stands on the scale to weigh [fue] himself.
Fueron (tense?)
They went (preterite) • "Se fueron" → "They went/They left"
*The pandas go into the closet and pulled out latex gloves, but the have no fingers so they can’t wear them on.
• Joel says “They went to the closet, but they couldn’t put them on (wear them on) [fueron].”
Fuimos (tense?)
We went (preterite)
*Joel and his friends think they hear loud feet stomping, and they are run away and say “EEEEE! [fuimos]”.
• Crying WEEE WEEE WEEE all the way home.
Iba (tense?)
He, she, it, or I went, was going to, used to (do something).
• 1st and 3rd person imperfect past tense
“María creía que yo la iba a poder ayudar a limpiar la casa.”
-Mary thought that I was going to be able to help her clean the house.
“Yo creía que Juan iba a ir a la tienda hoy.”
-I thought that John was going to go to the store today.
“Yo tuve un hermano iba por los montes mientras yo dormía.”
-I had a brother that used to walk in the forest while I slept.
*Joel tries to go down the dark hall leading to the doctors office. Joel runs back terrified saying, “I went down the hall and a giant sheep appeared saying ‘BAHHHH! [iba]’ and tried to stomp on me.”
Iré
(ee-RAY) - I will go
*Joel says he will go down the hall and use his wand (that shoots rays [iré] of light) to help him see so he can go down the hall safely.
Vaya
I go, he go, she go, it go
• 1st and 3rd person subjunctive
“María quiere que yo vaya a la farmacia, pero no puedo porque tengo que trabajar.”
-Mary wants me to go to the drug store but I can’t because I have to work.
“Es preciso que vaya a la universidad.”
-It is necessary that you go to the university.
“¡Ten cuidado de que el niño no se ponga en la corriente, no vaya a ser que se resfríe!”
-Be careful that the child is not in the draught, he might get a cold!
“Ahora, él desea que ella vaya a España para conocer a su familia.”
-Now, he wants her to go to Spain to meet his family.
*Joel’s friends convince him not to go because something smells strange in the back of the store.
• The store is on fire [vaya], so Joel hopes that he and the lizard never go in there.

*Joel says to Ir (the doctor), “I hope you’re not going anywhere else so that you can start fires [vayas].”
