Investigation Flashcards
Gregor Mendel
Genetics pioneer. He named dominant and recessive genes after seeing regular ratios in pea plant hybrids.
Independent Variable
Those that the scientist manipulates.
Only one independent variable in each.
Plotted in x-axis
Variables
factors affecting the outcome of an experimental investigation
Ex: the amount of water given to a plant might be the indepedent variable
Charles Darwin
an English biologist who proposed natural selection and evolution in On the Origin of Species.
Dependent Variable
Depend on the condition or value of the independent variable. Factors measured by scientists
Ex: Since light affects plant growth, plant growth would be the dependent variable in an experiment.
Feedback Loop
a sequence of experiments that generate more hypotheses and testing.
Galileo Galilei
Improved the telescope and used it to prove Copernicus’ heliocentric theory.
Controlled Variable
Those that remain the same across.
Ex: thermometer
Since water is not being researched, it would be a controlled variable in a light-growth experiment
Scientific Law
a proven explanation for a phenomenon
Disequilibrium
occurs when a child cannot use existing schemas to comprehend new information
Ex: Child moves abroad. Combining the old and new classroom norms is tricky.
Dmitri Mendeleev
A chemist (1834-1907) who published the first periodic table with elements arranged by mass
Heliocentricity
Astronomical theory that the sun is the center of our solar system. Copernicus and Galileo developed the theory.
Assimilation
Applying schemas to new items or circumstances
