Introduction Lecture Review Flashcards
Deviation from normal; A medical condition that is associated with many signs, symptoms or syndromes
Disease
The study of the nature of disease and its causes, processes, development, and consequences
Pathology
The study of the cause of disease
etiology
The study of the development of disease
pathogenesis
The sudden and widespread outbreak of disease in a group
Epidemic
The ongoing presence of a disease in a group
Endemic
A disease outbreak occurring over a large geographic area
Pandemic
ratio of diseased animals to well animals in a population
Morbidity
ratio of diseased animals that die to diseased animals
Mortality
disease that can be spread from animals to humans
zoonotic
medical term loss of hair
alopecia
medical term “redness” of skin
erythema
Disease that is diffuse (used commonly to describe skin lesions)
Generalized
disease process or infection spreading through the body
Systemic
A transitory disease of bacteria in the blood
Bacteremia
Bacterial multiplication and transfer in the blood
Septicemia
Pyogenic (pus forming) bacteria in the blood
Pyemia
Toxins in the blood
Toxemia
without signs of disease
Asymptomatic; Subclinical
symptoms of disease visible, readily observed
Clinical
near death
Moribund
disease having a short course with a sudden onset
acute
disease having an excessively acute onset
peracute
disease having a long course with a progressive onset; symptoms over a long period of time
chronic
Disease in a dormant state
latent
partial or complete disappearance of clinical signs of disease
remission
period from the time the organisms enters the host until the first symptoms appear
incubation period
symptoms indicate the onset of disease (Malaise, Lethargy, Fever)
prodromal period
period of time in which the body returns to normal
convalescence
disease caused by the presence of a foreign living organism in or on an animal’s body that creates a disturbance, leading to the development of signs of illness
infectious disease
disease with an internal source or caused by non-living/external factors
Non-infectious disease
disease spread from one animal to another by direct or indirect contact
Contagious/Communicable disease
disorder directly caused by a veterinarian/physician
Iatrogenic
disorder of unknown cause
Idiopathic
infection/disorder caused by pathogenic organisms contracted in a hospital setting
Nosocomial
A disease/defect which an animal is inflicted with over it’s lifetime
Acquired Disease
A disease/defect which an animal is born with
Congenital Disease
Disease that is inherited
Genetic Disease
the relationship where one organism benefits at the expense of another
Parasitism
relationship where the host and an organism survive in a beneficial relationship
Symbiosis
relationship where one organism benefits but at no cost to the host organism
Commensalism
Examples of Indirect or Predisposing Factors
that cause disease
chilling, crowding, poor diet, poor husbandry/sanitation, concurrent disease, poor ventilation. etc.
a list of possible disease causes
Differential Diagnosis
(DDx)
Determination of the cause of disease
Diagnosis
(Dx)
The predicted outcome of the disease
Prognosis
(Px)
