Anaphora
the speaker adresses a dead or absent person, object or abstraction
eg: O captain! O captain! (the captain’s dead)
Apostrophe
extended list of anything
eg: I see a dog, I see the savage types, I see …
Catalog
The omission from a text of a word or text.
eg: can be signified through “…..”
Ellipsis
The normal word order of a sentence is altered.
eg: Al garaje se fue
Hyperbaton
exaggeration for the sake of emphasis.
eg: I’ve been waiting for ages!
Hyperbole
set of images that represent objects, actions, feelings, ideas, etc
they can be classified into:
- visual
- auditory
- olfatory
- tactile
- gustatory
- kinetic
imagery
an affirmation is made indirectly by denying its opposite
eg: He is no fool
Litotes
eg: “I feel like if you push two blocks who don’t somehow belong together, you may break them”
Metaphor
using one object/concept to stand for another
eg: heart = strong feeling
sweat = hard work
Metonymy
combines logically incongruent terms in a compressed paradox
eg: It’s an open secret that they’re in love with each other
Oxymoron
a statement that violates common sense as it entails an apparent contradiction
eg: he fell up the hill into the moonlight
Paradox
attribution of human qualities to inanimate objects.
eg: O books who alone are liberal and free
Personification
eg: His doctor told him don’t drink, he drank. Don’t smoke, he smoked
