Intro Flashcards
Define sagittal plane
Slices made parallel to median plane
Define epithelial tissue
Covers and lines body (skin, MM)
List types of connective tissue
Elastic (arteries, abdomen), collagen(protein tissue that adds strength to other tissues), tendon (bone to muscle), ligament (bone to bone)
Difference between white yellow and brown adipose tissue
White: most animals
Yellow: in guernsey cattle and horses due to Vit A (carotene)
Brown: in newborns due to many mitochondria
What is periosteum
Outermost layer of bone that supplies blood and nerves to bone.
What is cancellous bone
Spongy and light weight, found near ends of bone for shock absorption
Difference between red white yellow and gelatinous bone marrow
Red: active
Yellow: fatty (can become active)
White: hard fat (cannot become active)
Gelatinous: broken down marrow in old or starved
Chondroblasts
Chondroclasts
Osteoblasts
Osteoclasts
Chondroblasts: cells that make cartilage
Chondroclasts: cells that break down cartilage
Osteoblasts : cells that make bone
Osteoclasts: cells that break down bone
When bones are fully ossified in c/d and horse
C/d: <1yr
Horse: 2-3yrs
Parts of bone: diaphysis
Epiphysis
Epiphyseal plate
Diaphysis: shaft
Epiohysis: end of bone
Epiphyseal plate: growth plate
