Occlusion of venous vessels in the cranial cavity.
Who is commonly affected by intracranial venous thrombosis?
Women
Aged 20-35
What are possible RF for intracranial venous thrombosis?
Hormonal factor- pill, pregnancy, and the peri-partum period
prothrombotic haematological conditions
Systemic disease- dehydration or sepsis
Local factors- skull abnormalities, trauma, or local infection
What are the common features of intracranial venous thrombosis?
headache (may be sudden onset)
nausea & vomiting
reduced consciousness
What are the other possible symptoms of intracranial venous thrombosis?
What is the gold standard diagnosis of intracranial venous thrombosis?
MRI venography
(alternative: CT venography)
What might be elevated in soemone with intracranial venous thrombosis?
D-Dimer
What does the most common form of intracranial venous thrombosis affect?
Superior sagittal sinus.
What does the least common form of intracranial venous thrombosis affect?
Cavernous sinus
What is the main management of intracranial venous thrombosis?
Anticoagulation
What is used for the acute management of intracranial venous thrombosis?
Low molecular weight heparin
What is used for the long term management of intracranial venous thrombosis?
Warfarin
What signs are specific to saggital sinus thrombosis?
seizures and hemiplegia
