Epilepsy 2 Flashcards
What are the two categories of epilepsy?
Focal seizure
Generalised seizure
What are the two forms of focal seizures?
Focal aware- simple partial
Focal impaired- complex partial
What are the features of a focal aware seizure?
No loss of consciousness
No post-ictal period
What are the features of a focal impaired awareness seizure?
Loss of consciousness
Post-ictal period
What are the features of focal seizures dependent on?
Which lobe of the brain is affected
What is the classification of epilepsy based on?
- Where seizures begin in the brain
- Level of awareness during a seizure
- Other features of seizures
Where do focal seizures start?
In a specific area, on one side of the brain
What symptoms would present if the seizure affected the temporal lobe?
Automatisms lip-smacking); déjà vu
Emotional disturbance (eg. sudden terror)
Olfactory, gustatory, or auditory hallucinations.
What symptoms would present if the seizure affected the frontal lobe?
Motor features such as Jacksonian features, dysphasia, or Todd’s palsy.
What symptoms would present if the seizure affected the parietal lobe?
Sensory symptoms- Tingling and numbness
Motor symptoms - due to spread of electrical activity to the pre-central gyrus in the frontal lobe.
What symptoms would present if the seizure affected the occipital lobe?
Visual symptoms such as spots and lines in the visual field.
What are the main forms of generalised seizures?
Absence
Tonic-clonic
Atonic
What are the main features of generalised seizures?
They involve networks on both sides of the brain at the onset
consciousness lost immediately
What can generalised seizures be divided into?
Motor- Tonic-clonic
Non-motor- Absence
