Brain Lesions Flashcards
Where can lesions occur in the brain?
Parietal lobe
Frontal lobe
Temporal lobe
Occipital lobe
Cerebellum
What symptoms can result from a lesion in the parietal lobe?
sensory inattention
apraxias
astereognosis (tactile agnosia)
inferior homonymous quadrantanopia
What is apraxias?
Inability to perform movements on command even though there is willingness to do so
What is astereognosis?
What syptoms can result from a lesion in the occipital lobe?
homonymous hemianopia (with macula sparing)
cortical blindness
visual agnosia
What is cortical blindness?
Total or partial loss of vision in a normal appearing eye
What is visual agnosia?
Condition in which a person can see but cannot recognize or interpret visual information
What symptoms can result from a lesion in the temporal lobe?
Superior homonymous quadrantanopia
Auditory agnosia
Prosopagnosia
Wernicke’s aphasia
What is auditory agnosia?
Inability to recognize or differentiate between sounds
What is prosopagnosia?
Difficulty recognising faces
What is Wernicke’s aphasia?
Fluent speech with impaired comprehension
What symptoms can result from a frontal lobe lesion?
disinhibition
perseveration
anosmia
inability to generate a list
Broca’s aphasia
What is anosmia?
Loss of sense of smell
In which area does Broca’s aphasia occur?
Posterior aspect of the frontal lobe, in the inferior frontal gyrus.
How does Broca’s aphasia present?
Non-fluent speech
