Into to Trauma/ Musculoskeletal Injuries Flashcards
1
Q
Trauma
A
- Injury caused from a source outside the body
- Usually two or more bodies colliding
2
Q
MOI
A
- How a person was injured
- Kinetics of trauma
- The science of analyzing MOI’S
- Helps predict injury
3
Q
When maintaining a high index of suspicion
A
- Death of an occupant in the same vehicle
- Unresponsive or ALOC after trauma
- Intrusion of >12” of space into patient’s passenger compartment
- Ejection from a motor vehicle
4
Q
Vehicle Collisions
A
- Frontal impact
- Rear impact
- Lateral impact
- Rollover Collisions
5
Q
Front Impact
A
- Up and over:
Abdomen, chest, head, neck - Down and under:
Knees, femurs, pelvis, spine
6
Q
Rear Impact
A
- Whiplash injuries
7
Q
Lateral Impact
A
- Injury patterns will depend on which side was hit compared to the patient
8
Q
Rollover Collisions
A
- Multi system trauma common
- Ejection common
- Crush injury common
9
Q
Vehicle vs Pedestrian
A
- Child: turns towards oncoming vehicle
- Femur, chest, abdomen, head injuries
- Adults: turns away from oncoming vehicle
- Legs, back, chest, shoulders, abdomen
10
Q
Lap belt only
A
- Can displace pelvis
11
Q
Lap and Shoulder belt
A
- Do not protect head and neck from injuries
12
Q
Airbags
A
- Significant injury can result:
- older adults
- short adults
- children
13
Q
Motorcycles
A
- 4 types of collisions:
- Head on
- Angular
- Ejection
- Lay the bike down
14
Q
Falls
A
- Common source of MOI
- Severity depends on:
Distance, Surface, Body part first impacting
15
Q
Gunshot wounds (GWS)
A
- 90% of fatal wounds are head, thorax, and abdomen
Head:
- Brain tissue displaced
- Quickly fatal
Chest:
- Pneumothorax common
- Can be quickly fatal
Abdomen:
- Many wounds not rapidly fatal
