Intigmentary System Flashcards
What are the components of skin?
- skin
- hair
- nails
- glands
- sensory structures
What is the function of skin?
- protect
- provide sensations
- regulate body temperature
What are the different layers of the skin?
- Epidermal Layer
- Dermal Layer
- Subcutaneous Layer
What is the epidermal layer composed of?
-keratinized stratified squamous epithelial tissue
What are 2 main cells types
- Keratinocytes
- Melanocytes
What are keratinocytes
-divide to produce the layers of epithelial calls with the outermost layer being dead cells
What is the function of keratinocytes?
-act as a mechanical barrier to prevent; abrasion, invasion by microorganisms, and prevent water loss
What are melanocytes?
produce pigment melanin
What is the function of melanocytes?
-protects the DNA of keratinocytes from UV light
Describe the dermis layer
- thicker region of the skin
- composed of connective tisse
What are the 2 regions of connective tissue within dermis?
- Papillary region (superficial, thinner)
- reticular region (deep, thicker, tougher)
What components are located in the dermis
- most sensory receptors
- glands
- hair follicles
- blood vessels
What are other names for the subcutaneous layer?
- hypodermis
- superficial fascia
Is the subcutaneous layer considered to be part of the skin?
No
What components are found in the subcutaneous layer
-many adipocytes
-blood vessels
pressure receptors
