Interpretation of a spriometry trace Flashcards
What is tidal volume?
The volume of air inspired or expired per breath. This increases during exercise.
What is Inspiratory reserve volume?
The volume able to be forcibly inspired during normal breathing. This decreases during exercise.
What is expiratory reserve volume?
The volume able to forcibly expired, after a normal breathe
This decreases slightly during exercise.
What is residual volume?
The volume of air that remains in the lungs after forced maximum expiration. No change to this volume during exercise.
What does the y-axis represent in the spirometer trace?
The Y axis represents the ml of air in the lungs. The lower the line, the lower the volume, the higher the line, the closer to max capacity.
What does the x-axis represent in the spirometer trace?
The X axis represents time. The further right the line travels, the longer its been since the trace began.
What is tidal volume represented by on the spirometer trace?
Two lines
What does the space below the 2 lines represent?
This space below the tidal volume represents the expiratory reserve volume. The air still available to exhale should exercise intensity increase.
What does the space above the 2 lines represent on the spirometer trace?
This space above the tidal volume represents the inspiratory reserve volume. The available lung space that can still be filled with air should exercise intensity increase.
