Cardiac cycle Flashcards
What are the sequence of events that occurs when the heart beats.
Diastole
Systole
What is the diastole?
The phase of the heartbeat when the chambers of the heart relax and fill with blood
What is the systole?
The phase of the heart beat when the chambers of the heart contract and empty
of blood (Blood pushed out of the heart)
When the heart beats, what is it known as?
The cardiac cycle
What sides of the heart go through diastole and systole?
Both right side and left side go through diastole and systole at the same time
What are the stages of the cardiac cycle?
Stage 1: Atrial Systole – Both the left/ right atria contract and pump blood into the ventricles.
Stage 2: Ventricular systole – Left/ right ventricles contract and blood is pumped into the aorta (left) and pulmonary artery (right).
Stage 3: Diastole – The left/ right atria and ventricles relax, the atria begin to fill with blood.
Which major artery exits the left ventricle and provides oxygenated blood to the body?
- Pulmonary artery
- Vena cava
- Aorta
Aorta
Which of the following functions of the cardiovascular system occurs in the veins?
- Diffusion of gases
- Carrying blood away from the heart
- Carrying blood towards the heart
Carrying blood towards the heart
Which term can be used to describe the relaxation phase of the heart?
- Systolic
- Diastolic
- Stroke volume
Diastolic
Which of these blood pressure readings is the average blood pressure for an adult?
- 120/80 mmHg
- 140/90 mmHg
- 100/70 mmHg
120/80 mmHg
What is defined as “the amount of blood pumped out of the heart per minute”?
- Stroke volume
- Heart rate
- Cardiac output
Cardiac output
Which of the following is a key function of the cardiovascular system?
- Nerve transmission
- Producing movement
- Maintaining body temperature
Maintaining body temperature
