Blood vessels Flashcards
During exercise or physical activity, what do arteries, capillaries and veins do?
Carry oxygenated blood to the working muscles from the heart and lungs
What is the scientific term for oxygenated blood
Arterial
What is the scientific term for deoxygenated blood?
Venous
What does an artery do?
Carry Arterial blood (Oxygenated blood) away from the heart
What are the properties of arteries?
They have thick walls
Elastic
Carries blood at a higher pressure than veins
What is the channel that the blood flows through called?
Lumen
What does the lumen do in arteries?
The lumen widens to allow more blood to flow through the arteries which happens when you exercise
What do veins do?
Carry venous blood (Deoxygenated blood) back to the heart
What are the properties of veins?
Have thinner walls than arteries
Less elastic than arteries
Carry blood at a low pressure
What are valves?
Prevents blood clot and makes sure that the blood is going in the right direction
Do arteries have valves?
No
Do veins have valves?
Yes, which keep venous blood flowing to the heart, and make sure that it doesn’t flow backwards.
What do capillaries carry at one end?
They carry arterial blood, which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the working muscles
What are the properties of capillaries?
One cell thick
The blood pressure is very low
What do capillaries carry at the other end?
they carry venous blood into the veins, picking up waste products and taking them round the body to be disposed of.
