EPOC and vascular shunting Flashcards
What is Redistribution of blood?
During exercise, blood flow to muscles increases to meet the increase in oxygen demand. This redirection of blood flow to the areas where it is most needed is known as a vascular shunt.
What does vasoconstriction mean?
The narrowing of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls
What does vasodilation mean?
The expanding of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls
What does EPOC stand for?
E - Excess
P - Post-exercise
O - Oxygen
C - Consumption
When does EPOC occur?
Only when the body works anaerobically
What waste product do our bodys produce when working anaerobically?
Lactic acid
When an athlete works anaerobically for to long lactic acid will build up in there muscles. As a result of this there is a rise in lactate levels in the body, what is this known as?
Lactate Accumulation
How is the waste product, lactic acid, removed?
It is removed through oxidising the lactic acid and turning it into carbon dioxide and water.
Why does an athlete take heavy breathes after exercise?
Because they are in oxygen debt
How is the oxygen debt payed back?
The oxygen inhaled by the athlete whilst deep breathing is used to pay back the oxygen debt in the muscles so that the muscles can recover and be replenished with oxygen.
How is an athletes performance affected whilst in oxygen debt?
An athletes performance is negatively impacted because the performer will have to slow down in order to get lots of oxygen in.
