A

Food that moistens - water for acute heat or dehydration
Cooling diets that are high in fruits and vegetables low in fried and fatty foods
Raw food if the digestive system is strong
Diuretic foods such as celery, cucumber and beetroot to stimulate urination and provide an escape route for heat
Foods that use cooling and moistening cooking methods: blanching, steaming, salting, cooking in plentiful water, raw food that is refreshing.

What are some beneficial foods for heat conditions?

A

Meat/seafood: crab
Vegetables: dandelion, cabbage, tomato, broccoli, cucumber, spinach, salads, mung beans, lettuce, celery, radish, eggplant
Grains and legumes: wheat, barley, millet
Fruit: pineapple, tangerine, melon, orange, lemon, kiwi, apple, pear and watermelon
Dairy and soy: yoghurt, tofu, tempeh, soy milk.
Drinks and condiments: black and green tea, mineral water, wheat beer, juices, kelp, spirulina

What are non-beneficial foods for heat conditions?

A

Thermally hot foods: stimulants, alcohol and sugar
Poor eating habits: overeating leads to stagnation and heat
Foods to avoid: chillies, cinnamon, ginger, mustard, horseradish, coffee, chocolate, cheap & heated vegetable oils, red meat (esp lamb), chicken, prawns, cheese, eggs, excess salt, peanuts, vinegar, deep fried food, barbecued food, roasted food.

What diet is recommended for Stomach (and intestinal) heat?

A
  • Whole raw foods may be too abrasive and irritating to inflamed tissue but juices may be well tolerated. Cooked and soft food may assist. Mucilaginous foods to cool, moisten and line the stomach.
    Avoid: as for general heat (non-beneficial food section)
    Beneficial foods:
  • Rice, barley, millet or oat porridge, banana, strawberry, melon, avo, cucumber, spinach, lettuce, rocket, watercress, cabbage (juice and cooked), tofu, soy milk, yoghurt.
  • Eat a small bowl of grated white radish (daikon) with a splash of soy sauce
  • Mung bean soup
  • Peppermint tea

  • Damp heat, toxic fire, fire. Fever, dry mouth and throat, insomnia, restlessness and irritability, thirst, dry mouth, voracious appetite, bleeding from the upper body (e.g. nose sclera, mouth), suppurative skin lesions, foul diarrhoea or dysentery, concentrated, smelly urine.
  • T: red with thick yellow coat
  • P: rapid, slippery and strong pulse
  • Complexion: red face, eyes and ears

  • Presenting as pounding headache, migraine, migraine, redness, swelling, pain or yellow muco-purulent discharge, facial flushing, ears swollen and painful, sore eyes, jaundice, irritable/hot tempered, bitter taste. Hypochondriac pain, urine dark or cloudy, inflammation and itching of external genitalia.
  • T: red or red edges and tip; yellow tongue coating
  • P: Wiry, slippery and strong pulse.

A
  • Clears heat and dries dampness. Used for Damp-heat patterns particularly stomach and intestines. Presenting as stomach damp-heat: vomiting, nausea, acid regurgitation, foul breath. Damp-heat in the intestines: diarrhoea or dysentery
  • Drains fire, resolves toxicity, used for heat with fire blazing particularly Heart or stomach fire. Presenting as high fever, palpitations, agitation, insomnia, disorientation, confused speech. Stomach fire: mucosal bleeding, excess appetite, burning epigastrium, vomiting. Liver fire: irritability, headaches, red eyes.
  • Clears heat topically, used for skin conditions. Presenting as eczema, burns & ulcerations (applied topically), boils, abscesses, sores, herpes, used topically for red and painful eyes and ulcers of the tongue and mouth.
  • Clears heat, stops bleeding, used for Heat in the blood. Presenting as bleeding due to Heat/Fire, nosebleed, blood in urine, stools, vomit.

Damp-heat affecting the stomach – fever, thirst without desire to drink, nausea/vomiting. Damp-heat affecting the intestines-diarrhoea, dysentery. Damp-heat type of jaundice – bright yellow skin complexion, covering the entire body.
  • Clears heat, stops bleeding, used for heat in the blood. Presenting as bleeding in the mouth or nose, blood in stools/urine, coughing blood.
  • Clears heat, calms foetus, used for restless foetus due to heat. Presenting as threatened abortion due to heat inducing uterine bleeding
  • Descends Yang, used for ascendant Liver Yang. Presenting as irritability, headache, red eyes, flushed face and bitter taste.

  • Clears heat and promotes urination – urinary dribbling. Damp-heat with stranguira presents as difficult, painful urinary dribbling, jaundice.
