What is the general nature of foods for internal heat conditions?
Generally cool to cold, flavours of bitter, sour and salty
What dietary suggestions should be made to clients with internal heat conditions?
Food that moistens - water for acute heat or dehydration
Cooling diets that are high in fruits and vegetables low in fried and fatty foods
Raw food if the digestive system is strong
Diuretic foods such as celery, cucumber and beetroot to stimulate urination and provide an escape route for heat
Foods that use cooling and moistening cooking methods: blanching, steaming, salting, cooking in plentiful water, raw food that is refreshing.
What are some beneficial foods for heat conditions?
Meat/seafood: crab
Vegetables: dandelion, cabbage, tomato, broccoli, cucumber, spinach, salads, mung beans, lettuce, celery, radish, eggplant
Grains and legumes: wheat, barley, millet
Fruit: pineapple, tangerine, melon, orange, lemon, kiwi, apple, pear and watermelon
Dairy and soy: yoghurt, tofu, tempeh, soy milk.
Drinks and condiments: black and green tea, mineral water, wheat beer, juices, kelp, spirulina
What are non-beneficial foods for heat conditions?
Thermally hot foods: stimulants, alcohol and sugar
Poor eating habits: overeating leads to stagnation and heat
Foods to avoid: chillies, cinnamon, ginger, mustard, horseradish, coffee, chocolate, cheap & heated vegetable oils, red meat (esp lamb), chicken, prawns, cheese, eggs, excess salt, peanuts, vinegar, deep fried food, barbecued food, roasted food.
What diet is recommended for Stomach (and intestinal) heat?
- Whole raw foods may be too abrasive and irritating to inflamed tissue but juices may be well tolerated. Cooked and soft food may assist. Mucilaginous foods to cool, moisten and line the stomach.
Avoid: as for general heat (non-beneficial food section)
Beneficial foods: - Rice, barley, millet or oat porridge, banana, strawberry, melon, avo, cucumber, spinach, lettuce, rocket, watercress, cabbage (juice and cooked), tofu, soy milk, yoghurt.
- Eat a small bowl of grated white radish (daikon) with a splash of soy sauce
- Mung bean soup
- Peppermint tea

What are the patterns, signs and symptoms of Huang Lian Jie Du Tang?
- Clears toxic heat and damp heat from the three jiao, purging fire for excessive heat, fire and toxin of the three jiao
- Damp heat, toxic fire, fire. Fever, dry mouth and throat, insomnia, restlessness and irritability, thirst, dry mouth, voracious appetite, bleeding from the upper body (e.g. nose sclera, mouth), suppurative skin lesions, foul diarrhoea or dysentery, concentrated, smelly urine.
- T: red with thick yellow coat
- P: rapid, slippery and strong pulse
- Complexion: red face, eyes and ears
What are the cautions / contra of Huang Lian Jie Du Tang?
Caution on using long-term for Spleen and Stomach function; depletes yin, over dosage can cause nausea and vomiting.
What is the dosage of Huang Lian Jie Du Tang?
6-8 pills at three times per day

What is the function of Long Dan Xie Gan Tang?
- Reduces excessive fire from the Liver and GB
- Remove damp-heat from the LJ, clears damp-heat from the Liver and GB
What are the signs and symptoms of Long Dan Xie Dan Tang?
- Excessive fire flaming up along the Liver and GB.
- Presenting as pounding headache, migraine, migraine, redness, swelling, pain or yellow muco-purulent discharge, facial flushing, ears swollen and painful, sore eyes, jaundice, irritable/hot tempered, bitter taste. Hypochondriac pain, urine dark or cloudy, inflammation and itching of external genitalia.
- T: red or red edges and tip; yellow tongue coating
- P: Wiry, slippery and strong pulse.
