Integumentary Sytem Flashcards
What makes up the integumentary system?
Consists of the skin and its derivatives
What is another name for the integument?
Cutaneous Membrane
What are the two layers of the integument?
- Epidermis
Stratified squamous epithelium
- Dermis
Primarily dense irregular connective tissue
The layer beneath the integument is called the
Subcutaneous layer, or hypodermis
What are the four cells found in the integument?
Keratinocyte
Melanocyte
Lancerhans
Merkerl
Which of the four cells found in the integument is this?

Keratinocyte

Which of the four cells found in the integument is this?

Langerhans Cell
Which of the four cells found in the integument is this?

Merkel Cell
Thick Skin
- Found on the palms of hands, soles of feet, and surgaces of fingers and toes
- Has all 5 layers of the epidermal strata
- Has sweat glands
- No hair follicles or sebaceous glands
- From 0.4 to 0.6 mm thick
Thin skin
- Covers most of the body
- Lacks a stratum lucidium
- Has seat glands, hair follicles and sebaceous glands
- from 0.075 to 0.150 mm thick

Thin Skin
7 functions of the integumentary system
Protection
Regulation of Body Temperature
Sensation
Absorption
Excretion
Blood Reservoir
Vitamin D Synthesis
Explain the Function of the Integumentary System: Protection
- Immunity (Langerhans cells)
- Physical Barrier
- Hair/Nails
- Color
Explain the Function of the Integumentary System: Regulation of Body Temperature
- Sweat
- Arrector pilli muscle: goose bumps
Explain the Function of the Integumentary System: Sensation
- Pain
- Temperature
- Touch (Merkel cells)
- Pressure
- Tickle
- Itch
Explain the Function of the Integumentary System: Absorption
- No: water soluble
- Yes: lipid soluble= Vitamins A,D,E,K; acetone, oxygen, carbon dioxide, heavy metals, gases, drugs ect.
Explain the Function of the Integumentary System: Excretion
- Ions
- Urea
- Amino Acids
- Water
Explain the Function of the Integumentary System: Blood Resevoir
Extensive network of blood vessels that carry 8-10% of total blood flow of a resting adult
Explain the Function of the Integumentary System: Vitamin D Synthesis
Skin-Liver/Kidney-GI tract-Ca++
The cell type that makes up the majority of cells in the epidermis is the
Keratinocyte
Two people with different skin colors differ in
How much melanin is produced by the melanocytes
You are looking at a slide of the integument under the microscope. You see dense irregular connective tissue. What layer of the integument are you viewing?
Dermis
Response to damaged tissues: Regeneration
- Replacement of damaged cells with same cell type
- Restores organ funciton
Response to damaged tissues: Fibrosis
- Gap filled with scar tissue
- Composed of collagen produced by fibroblasts
- Functional activities not resotred
- If organ too damaged or cells lack ability to divide
Stages of Wound Healing
1) Cut blood vessels bleen into wound
2) Blood clot- formed by platelets sticking together- forms and leucocytes clean the wound
3) Blood vessels regros and granulation tissue forms
Granulation tissue: first step in laying down skin: connective tissue
4)Epithelium regenerates and connective tissue fibrosis occurs (from bottom up)

First Degree Burn
Epidermis is hurt: red, swollen, pain, no blisters, heals in 3-6 days, no scarring, flaking
Second Degree Burn
Destroys epidermis + upper dermis: red, blisters, edema, pain, heals in 3-4 weeks, may scar
Third degree burn
Destroys epidermis+ all of dermis (no nerves)

What are the common forms of skin cancer?
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Melanoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Shiny, dome-shaped, MOST COMMON (78%), slow growing, basale layer, rarely metastasizes.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Scaly, red, spinosum layer, 2nd most common (20%), can be anywhere there is pigment, metastazises to the lymph nodes.
Melanoma
Least common but deadly (2%), can be anywhere there is pigment, metastasizes to the lymph
Which type of skin cancer is most common?
Basale Cell Carcinoma
Which type of skin cancer spreads to lymph nodes?
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Which type of skin cancer is the least common, and spreads to the lymph?
Melanoma

Basale Cell Carcinoma
