Inquiry of Science (lecture 2) Flashcards
What is a hypothesis?
A plausable explanation based on observation and assumptions that lead to a testable prediction
- building on top of other research and ideas
What’s a control
Where you make sure that all the variables that could be fixed are done so that the output of that experiment is not due to any variations/changes within the that you are using
Inductive reasoning
When you derive generalizations from a large # of scientific observations or data analysis. Looking at data and generalizations to make predictions , extracting a likely premise from very specific and limited observations.
Deductive reasoning
Uses general premises to make specific predictions.,
initial observations can lead to multiple hypothesis, which then you test out
You know proven observation and then make a very specific prediction
more scientific than inductive reasoning
Hypothesis order
inductive reasoning –> hypothesis –> experiment –> deductive reasoning
a hypothesis must be
testable
independent variable
is the one that is manipulated by the researchers
dependent variable
is the one predicted to be affected in response
A theory is
broader in scope than a hypothesis, but general enough to lead to many new testable hypothese, and is supported by a large body of evidence in comparison to a hypothesis
