Binary Fission Flashcards
Prokaryotes reproduce by
a type of cell division called binary fission
In binary fission
the chromosome replicated (beginning at the origin of replication) and the two daughter chromosomes actively move apart
Mitosis most likely evolved
from binary fission, because prokaryotes evolved before eukaryotes
Endosymbiont Theory
an ancestor of the eukaryotic cells engulfed an oxygen using nonphotosynthetic prokaryotic cell. Eventually they formed a relationship becoming endosymbiot. Over evolution they became one organism, eukaryotic cell with the endosymbiont becoming the mitochondrion. One of the cells had taken up photosynthetic prokaryote, becomeing the ancestor of the eukaryotic cells that contain chloroplast.
Benign tumors
are not cancerous
Malignent tumors
are cancerous, and cane move to other parts of the body
How is a normal cell transformed into a cancerous cell?
The proteins involved in regulating cell division events no longer appropriately drive progression from one cell cycle stage to the next. Rather than lacking function, cancer cells reproduce at a rate far beyond the normally tightly regulated boundaries of the cell cycle.
When cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes,
this process goes wrong. New cells form when your body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form tumor.
In metastasis,
cancer cells break away from the original (primary) tumor, travel through the blood or lymph system, and form a new tumor in other organs or tissues of the body.
metastasis is
The spread of cancer cells from the place where they first formed to another part of the body.
