Injured child Flashcards
What injuries do children often sustain?
Fractures Wounds Burns and scalds Head injury Dorowning
What are th common sites of fractures in kids?
Radius
Clavicle
Tibia
What is the most common fracture seen in kids?
Buckle fracture of distal radius
Why are growth plate factors important?
Point o weakness in long bones, so often break here
Can cause long term deformity
What type of head injuries are v common?
Minor
Why do children get injured differently?
Different anatomical features
Different psychological and psychological response
Different spectrum of injury patterns
What anatomical differences cause different injuries in kids to adults?
Size
Skeleton incompletely calcified
Less elastic connective tissue
Crowding of poorly protected organs
What size differences are important to consider in injury?
Smaller –> relatively greater amount of energy absorbed for same force of impact
Large head –> easily injuries
What are the common causes of life threatening trauma in kids?
Resp failure
Circulatory failure
What are the common causes of trauma respiratory failure?
Obstruction- foreign body inhalation, pneumothorax
Depression- raised intracranial pressure from head injury
What are the common causes of circulatory failure in kids?
Fluid loss- burns, trauma
Fluid maldistribution- sepsis
What is the 1st peak of death?
Instant, at scene
Unsurvicale major vessel or brain injury
What is the 2nd peak of death?
Significant ABCD problems, often in golden hour
What is the 3rd peak of death?
Multi organ failure
Sepsis
