Herpes Zoster (shingles)
Dormant in the Dorsal Root Ganglia of spinal chord. Usually unilateral on trunk. may transmit chx pox.
Cytomegalovirus
Viral inflam. of retna of eye. Herpes type virus. Most have by 40 but immune compromised worse risk. S/S: blind spots, decreased vision. Drugs: Foscarnet (foscavir) and Ganciclovir.
Genital Warts
HPV
Meningitis
Infection of meninges (brain tissue). Brudinski’s sign (stiff neck), Kernig’s sign (vomiting/high fever) and Headache.
Encephalitis
Accute inflam. of brain.
Conjunctivitis
Inflamm. of conjunctiva, Very contagious.
Sty
Bacterial Infection in an oil gland in eye.
Malaria
Spread by mosquitos.
Toxoplasmosis
Single -cell parasite )toxoplasma gondii. Spread by cat feces and undercooked, raw meat.pregnant mom can spread to fetus.
Typhoid Fever
Life threatening illness. Bacteria; Salmonella Typhi. Most cases after intenational travel. In water. Tx: Antibiotics: Ampicillin, Ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
Cat Scratch Fever
Bartonella bacteria. usually not serious but sometimes antibiotics with compromised patient. Fatigue, fever H/A, swollen lymph.
Listeriosis
Rare. Compromised immune syst or pregnant mom. Can lead to premature birth or death of child. Usually raw meat or soft cheeses.
Psudomonas Aeuginosa
Antibiotic resistant. Found on medical equipment and hot tubs. Strong. Breaks down oil spills. Sepsis. fatal.
Vibrio Vulnificus
A gram negative bacteruim found in marine and freshwater environment, seafood. like raw oysters. Acute vomit/diarrhea but not serious unless immno-compromised.
