What is the main cause of Duodenal Peptic Ulcers?
Heliobacter pylori bacteria. Rarely Cancerous.
What is the main cause of gastric peptic ulcer?
Use of NSAID’s, Often Cancerous.
Which peptic ulcers are better with eating and which are worse?
Duodenal - better. Gastric-Worse.
What stool signs show bleeding in Upper GI tract?
Black, tarry, sticky stool. (Melena)
What stool signs show ulcer d/t malabsorption of fats (reduced bile flow)?
Light, clay colored stool, soft, bulky, foul smelling (steatorrhea)
What are 4 bacteria that infect the digestive tract and cause disease?
- Giardia (infected food/water), 2. Shigella ( Bactillary dysentery) from fecis/food, 3. Amebic Dysentery ( hot clymatea, contaminated water/soil, 4. Clostridium Difficile (from antibiotics in hospital).
What are the types of roundworms that can infest the digestive tract?
- Hookworms ( (feet- can migrate to LU), 2. Pinworms (anus), 3. Trichinosis (from pork)
What is the cause of tapeworms?
Undercooked Fish or Meat. They cause anemia.

- Appendicitis, 2. IBS, 3. Chron’s Disease. 4. Ulcerative Colitis, 5. Diverticulosis, 6. Diverticulitis.
List 4 signs of Acute appendicitis:
- Pain in RLQ, 2. rebound pain at McBurneys Point, 3. Dull Pain worse w/leg lift. 4. Low grade fever.
What are 4 signs/causes of IBS?
1.Motility of entire GI tract.2. Women more than men. 3. Stress, diet, drugs, hormones. 4. Alt. Constipation /Diarrh. w/gas and pain.
Chrones Disease is characterized by what 5 S/S?
- Chronic Inflammation of entire digestive tract/ intestinal wall. 2. RLQ pain. 3. Chronic diarrhea/ vomit. 4. Bleeding from rectum.5. Fever.
What are 5 S/S of Ulcerative Colitis?
Chronic inflamm./ulceration of LI. 2. Visible blood/mucous in stool. 3. Joint pain. 4. Weight Loss. 5. High Fever.
Diverticulosis are what?
Bulges at points of weakness in diverticulum with bleeding, gas, constipation and LLQ pain.
