Endocrine System Diseases Flashcards
Cushing’s syndrome
Hypersecretion of glucocorticoids, redistribution of body fat. S/S Moon face, swollen red face, buffalo hump, thin red skin.
Addison’s disease
Hyposecretion of mineralcoricoids an glucocorticoids. Drop in blood sodium and glucose levels. Increase in Potassuim. S/S: Dehydration, weight loss, hyperpigmentation.
Grave’s Disease
Hypersecretion of thyroid hormone: S/S: Proptosis (eye bulge), Toxic diffuse goiter, Increased nervousness, perspiration.Raised skin over shins. Hyperthyroidism.
Hashimoto’s Disease
Hypothyroidism. Hyposecretion of thyroid hormone. Enlarged goiter. More common in females 30-50. Autoimmune.
Simple Goiter
Deficiency of Thyroid hormones d/t iodine deficency.
Diabetes Mellitus Type I
IDDM: Insulin dependent, Juvenile onset, Rare.
Diabetes Mellitis Type II
NIDDM: Non-insulin dependent, Adult onset (usually), overweight, hereditary, common.
Gestational Diabetes
carbohydrate intolerance during pregnancy. usually resolves after delivery.
Diabetes insipidus
Frequent pale urination and thirst/dehydration. Inadequate pituitary anti-diuretic hormone.
Cretianism
Severely stunted mental and physical growth d/t underactive thyroid gland in infancy/childhood.
Dwarfism
Stunted physical growth d/t underactive Growth hormone in childhood. (GH)
Gigantism
Overactive growth hormone in childhood. (GH) usually with tumor of pituitary.
Acromegaly
Over secretion of growth hormone (GH) during adulthood. (associated w/ Gigantism)
Syndrome X
A collection of metabolic abnormalities: HBP, HBSugar, Too much fat around waist. High Triglcerides, cholesterol and insulin resistance. Greater risk of stroke and Heart disease.
Changes in Melanin
Vitilligo (white spots) and cafe’-Au-lait Spots (pigmented)
