Explain the general concept of pelvic inflammatory disease?
Infection starting in the vulva or vagina and spreading upward through most of the female parts.
What are the 3 most classical symptoms of PID?
Pelvic pain, fever, and vaginal discharge
What are the two most common pathogens causing PID?
Neesseria gonorrhoeae and chlamydia
Gonococcal infection is characterized by what morphologically?
Acute inflammation of involved mucosal surfaces
What will we see on smears for gonococcal infection?
Gram negative diplococci within neutrophils
What is a big difference between non gonococcal PID vs. gonococcal PID?
Non gonococcal like staph invades further through the wall and into other structures so bacteremia is a much more frequent complication with non gonococcal PID.
What are the two acute complications of PID?
Peritonitis and bacteremia
What are the 5 chronic complications of PID?
Infertility, tubal obstruction, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic pain and intestinal obstruction
