Immunology Flashcards
What drives autoimmunity?
Activation of auto-reactive T and B cells
What CD4+ cells are involved in RA?
Th1 and Th17
What kind of hypersensitivity reaction is MG?
Type II
What kind of hypersensitivity reaction is RA?
Type IV
What is rheumatic factor (RF)?
An autoantibody found in RA which attacks the Fc region of IgG
What is the pathophysiology of myasthenia gravis?
Autoimmune condition in which auto IgG binds to postsynaptic ACh receptors -> inhibits contraction
How do patients with MG typically present?
Eye drooping
Facial muscles are most commonly affected
Rarely neck, shoulders and hip
How do you diagnose myasthenia gravis?
Presence of anti-AChR IgG
What is the first line management for myasthenia gravis?
Why must this drug be carefully monitored?
Anti-cholinesterase agents
- Pyridostigmine
Can cause lots of side effects as increasing half life of ACh
