Elective Surgery Flashcards
What is a psuedotumour?
What can this lead to?
Inflammatory granuloma caused by metal particles
Muscle and bone necrosis
If trying to avoid metal replacement due to their risk of pseudotumours and decide on polyethylene replacement instead.
What is the risk that comes with them?
Can cause an inflammatory response which leads to osteolysis -> loosening
What type of replacement has a tendency to shatter due to their brittleness?
Ceramic
Why is it that if a deep infection is found after 3 weeks or so in the new joint, the whole new joint has to removed as opposed to washout and 6 week PO antibiotic therapy?
A biofilm will have formed over the new joint which prevents the body from being able to fight the infection
Define arthrodesis
When is it commonly used?
Artificial fusion of a joint
Arthritis in wrist, ankle and hallux rigidus
Osteotomy is a process involving the realignment of bones to limit pressure going through the diseased area.
In the early stages of what disease is this typically used?
OA
What should be done to settle the vast majority of soft tissue problems?
Rest, anti-inflams, painkillers
What are the two regions of the body that if tendonitis is present should not be treated with steroid injections?
Extensor mechanism of knee
Achilles tendon
What is surgical debridement?
Removal of diseased tissue/bone
For what 2 common conditions can nerve decompression surgery be offered?
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Cubital tunnel syndrome
What organisms most commonly cause deep infection post joint surgery?
Staph aureus
Gram negative bacilli - coliforms
What should NOT be done before a surgical option has been decided for patients with deep infection of new joint
Give antibiotics - can interfere with samples
