Why do we need to know it?
Affects all patients, infections are common, some are more susceptible
What is immunity?
Protection or defence against infections - Bacteria, Virus, Fungi, Toxins, Cancer
What is the immune system?
Distinguishes self from non-self molecules
What is cellular defence?
Phagocytosis, Granulcytes
What are B cells?
Mature in bone marrow, secrete antibodies, recognise pathogens
What are T cells?
Mature in thymus, help B cells, destroy antigens, some can kill cancer cells.
What is immunodeficiency?
Chemotherapy, Immunosupress medication, spelenectomy, bone marrow dysfunction
What is secondary immunodeficiency?
Malnutrition, burns, diabetes, immunotoxic meds, drugs, AIDS
What is hypersensitivity?
Excessive immune reaction against harmless antigen
