Relates to how individuals define themselves, what is important to them E.g. DNA
social identity
Defines individuals based on the social group E.g. ethnic groups
collective identity
shared by social groups including personal and social identities E.g. Goths
Multiple Identities
Several identities in different circumstances E.g. Good student, Goth in peer group
Goffman: Stigmatised identity
an undesirable or demeaning identity that excludes people from acceptance in society.
Becker: master status
dominate identity which overrides other aspects of a persons identity
Giddens and Sutton: construction
. Primary identities: early life during primary socialisation through family
. Secondary identities: linked to secondary socialisation through school or work
Functionalist view on identity
. identities largely fixed based on shared norms and values
. Socialised through primary and secondary
Marxist view on identity
. identities largely fixed based on social class positions

identities largely fixed based on gender caused by gender stereotypes
