Disability
A physical or mental impairment which has a long term effect on a persons ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities

Media stereotyping leads us to think that disabled people are:
. Dependent on others
. Unable to contribute to society
. Non-sexual
. Unable to express themselves
Disability as master status
May struggle to assert their own choice of identity as the disabled identity becomes their master status and overrides personal identities.
Disability as stigmatised identity
Goffman, the stigma attached to disability can lead to spoiled identities and face exclusion E.g. discrimination
They may fail at impression management because stereotypes spoil presentation of self.
What did Marxist Finkelstein suggest about disability?
Negative attitude towards the disabled may be the product of capitalisms emphasis of work as a source of identity.
This means they are an economic burden for society
