Identifying naming and classifying species Flashcards
Species #
5-20 milllion species
Biodiversity
wide range of living organisms that are vital to the sustainability of ecosystems
3 species concepts
Morphological, biological, phylogenetic
Morphological concept
Morphology of an organism - what they look like. It is simple and widely used but too subjective. How much is too much? all populations are made up of non identical organisms
Biological concept
Determined on the ability to interbreed in nature providing viable and fertile offspring. It is widely used as it is simple but specific. Cannot be applied in extinct or asexual or population barriers
Phylogenetic concept
Determined by evolutionary relationships among organisms. It compares DNA sequences together to see how species are related. Can be applied to extinct species but evolutionary history is not known for all species
Taxonomy
A branch of biology that focuses on naming, identifying and and classifying a species.
Binomial nomenclature
Genus name - capitalized and italicized, scientific name - italicized
Who developed the system for naming organisms
Carl linneo
