Comparing Bacteria and Archaea Flashcards
Prokaryotes fall under 2 of the 3 domains….
Bacteria and Archaea
Bacteria and Archaea can be classified on which 3 shapes
cocci (round), bacilli (rods), and spirillum (spiral)
Aggregations
clusters of cells grouped together
Nutrition for Bacteria and Archaea
Methanogenesis (A) and Photosynthesis (B)
Methanogenesis
Unique to Archaea, biological process used to create energy: uses methane as a byproduct
Photosynthesis (bacteria)
Unique to bacteria, uses sunlight to create energy “cyanobacteria”
Habitat of Bacteria and Archaea
can exist in aerobic and anaerobic environments
B: Mesophiles - moderate conditions
A: Extremophiles - extreme conditions
What are some of the extreme conditions archaea can live in
Thermophile - heat lover
Halophile - salt lover
Acidophile - acid lover
What is binary fission
It happens in both bacteria and archaea, its when the cells replicate by the cytoplasm splitting at the septum creating 2 indentical daughter cells
What are 2 things that happen when bacteria is living in less favourable conditions
Conjugation and Creation of endospores
Conjugation
When bacteria passes on genetic material from cell to another
Creation of endospores
It has structures that store genetic material that is resistant to extreme environments. They cannot like as an endospore forever only temporary.
