Functions of the Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the ciculatory system
A specialized system for delivering essential substances to all its cells around the organism
What are the 3 major functions of the circulatory system
- Transportation of materials such as waste, gasses, chemical substances, and nutrients
- Regulates internal temperature
3.Protects against blood loss from injury/disease
What are the 3 components of the circulatory system
Heart, Blood vessels, and blood
What is the heart
The muscular organ that pumps blood to the lungs and body continuously
What are blood vessels
A system of hollow tubes through which the blood moves
What is blood
The fluid that circulates throughout the body, transporting essential substances
Many invertebrates have what circulatory system
Open circulatory system
All vertebrates have what kind of circulatory system
Closed circulatory system
What is hemolymph
A mixture of blood and other bodily fluids
How does an open circulatory system work
Blood flows freely within the body cavity and makes direct contact with organs and tissues. Ostia (tiny holes in the heart) allow for hemolymph to enter the heart. Muscle contractions move this mixture back into the body cavity.
How does a closed circulatory system work
The blood is contained in vessels and is separated from interstitial fluids. This system must be kept under pressure and pumped at a sufficient speed to supply to the cells of their metabolic demands
How many chambers of the heart do mammals have
4 chambers
Direction of blood in the heart
Atria - ventricles - body or lungs
What separates the chambers on the right side of the chambers from the left side
Septum
