Cells and the Cell Cycle Flashcards
Heredity
genetics to one generation to another
Cell theory
- cells are the basic structural unit of life
- All cells come from pre-existing cells
- All organisms are composed of 1 or more cells
The cell cycle
Used to create new daughter cells from the parent cell (all somatic cells)
Functions of cell division in multicellular organisms
maintenance, repair, and growth
How long does the cell cycle take for cells to complete
12-24 hours
What are the 3 main stages of the cell cycle
- Interphase
- Mitosis
3.Cytokinesis
What happens in Interphase
cell growth, develops into functioning cell, copies DNA to prepare for division
Mitosis
produces daughter cells from one parent cell (genetically identical)
Prophase
-Chromatin condenses into chromosomes (each chromosome has 2 identical copies of genetic material)
-Held together by centromere
-disappearance of nucleolus and nuclear membrane
-centrosomes move to opposite poles and spindle fibers are created
Metaphase
Spindle fibers (attached to centromere) guide chromosomes to cell’s equator
Anaphase
-each centromere splits and siter chromatid sperate
-spindle fibers shorten and pull chromatid to poles
Telophase
Chromosome unwind into chromatin and nuclear envelop and nucleolus reform
Cytokinesis
division o of cytoplasm
Cytokinesis of animal cell
indentation at equator pinches inward to divide cytoplasm and organelles
Cytokinesis of plant cell
cell wall can’t pinch so cell plate forms between daughter cells and then cell wall forms on either side
