What is it?
A
Functional bowel disorder in which abdominal pain is associated with a change in bowel habit in the absence of structural pathology

A
Anxiety/stress/depression (more common in women)

A
SOCRATES
- Impact on activites
- Diet/exercise/mental well-being

Investigations for IBS are to do what?
A
Rule out IBD, coeliac disease etc

Investigations to do for IBS?
A
- FBC (anaemia, raised platelets suggetsing inflammation)
- ESR/CRP (maybe raised in inflammation)
- Coeliac serology

Management of IBS?
A
- ID dietary/mental triggers
- Dietary advice
- Recommend increased probiotic intake
- Consider anti-diarhhoeals (loperamide)
- Laxatives for constipation
- Anti-spasmodics if abdo pain doesn’t resolve

Exam for IBS?
A
- Check BMI fro unexplained wt loss
- Abdo exam to check for tenderness/masses
- PR exam to check for rectal pathology

When to diagnose IBS?
A
If patient reports . 6 months of abdo discomfort with
- improvement with defecation
- Change in frequency of stool
- Change in appearance of stool

A
