Definition of polyps
A
Abnormal growth of tissue projecting from colonic mucosa

Types of polyps?
A
-Adenoma= tubular, villous, tubulovillous, flat, sessile, pedunculated, all ******dysplastic

How adenoma becomes adenocarcinoma?
A
Initial mutation with lots of subsequent mutations leading to adenocarcinoma

FAP means?

Familial adenomatous polyposis

What is FAP?
A
- Adenomas
- Mutations in the APC gene (tumour suppresor)
- V high risk of developing colonic cancer

Describe Lynch syndrome?

- Adenomas
- Mutation in the DNA mismatch repair gene
- Associated with other cancers as well as colorectal **

Signs/symptoms of polyps?
A
- Asymptomatic
- Rectal bleeding -> anaemia
- Mucus in stool
- Abdo pain
- Diarrhoea/constipation

- Majority of colonic cancers arise from pre-existing adenomatous polyps
- Transformation of polyp to cancer 3-5 years - need screening
